Can you put your at&t sim card without a data plan into an iphone 3g?

so. im buying an iphone 3g from a friend, and i was wondering if i can just put my sim card in there? will i get charge even i dont use internet? can i use it as an ipod touch and connect it to my wifi at home? how about my number in my sim card? what will happen to them?Can you put your at%26amp;t sim card without a data plan into an iphone 3g?
